ECC PlaygroundThe Hannibal Early Childhood Center has a new surface thanks to the Playground Scrap Tire Material Grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Waste Management program.

The new surface is made from recycled tires from Missouri. The full amount of the grant was $32,071, which covered the cost of the surface, and its installation. Jenny Curtis, Parent Pay and Title 1 Pre-K teacher at ECC, is who applied for the grant that was awarded to Hannibal Public Schools.

Prior to this surface, the playground often would become too muddy to use, even after just small showers. Mrs. Curtis shared, “Our new playground covering is wonderful, we had a pop up shower one morning last week and the students were still able to get outside for fresh air and movement in the afternoon. If this had happened in the past we would have had to stay inside due to the muddy playground.”

In addition to being less muddy, the playground is more accessible for students. “The new ground covering is fantastic.  We are so grateful. It has enlarged the play area for our students and made the playground accessible,” stated Nichole Ancell, a Title Preschool/Early Childhood Special Education Teacher.

Hannibal Public Schools thanks the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for the funding opportunity, and our dedicated staff for identifying resources that help us better serve District students and families.
